Neighborhoods-
The downtown area is beautiful, vibrant and historical. It is a tourist area that has thrived for 150 years. There is the 3rd tallest national monument, there are old and new commercial business to cater to your every whim. The food is awesome from burgers and lighter fare to lobster and the best wines. After labor Day and once students are back to school, some places are closed during the week so make sure you check with your favorite venue when you are visiting off season. That said, September is often called the most beautiful month to visit because every thing is still open and the weather is still awesome. If big crowds is what you seek, between late June and the first weeks of August on weekends will satisfy your desire for big crowds.
Watercraft Excursions-
Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rental in the South Bass Island State Park- It has the best ratings, safety record and services. Kayaks, Paddle Boards, Jet Skis, Power Boats.
Sightseeing-
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial- You can see multiple states and countries on a clear day and of course really get the lay of the land on the island. It commemorates a very important battle in our history. The federal government doesn’t build a place like this for nothing! 8 locals recommend
South Bass Island State Park- It’s free! There are glacial grooves, the remnants of the historic Victory Hotel from the Gilded Age of America. Sit and have a picnic or just enjoy the incredible view away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.
Oak Point State Park- Its the “other” state park that not all tourists know about. You can see the entire harbor and enjoy a nice quiet and peaceful sit for a while.
South Bass Island Lighthouse- Its a long trip from downtown but will be a scenic golf cart drive and a really cool place to see if you are looking for free things to do. Tours available as well- very close to where the Miller Ferry brings you to the island.
Traveler advice
Getting aroundGolf carts are the way to get around on the islandI know it sounds like a pitch to rent a cart from us but it really is the best way to see the island. There are usually so many of them on the road, a car or truck is more difficult to maneuver and certainly more difficult to find a parking space.Helpful?

Useful phrases If someone is giving you a hard time…Whether it is a bartender, bouncer, police officer, park ranger, if your goal is to simply continue on about your way, the best response usually is “Thank you (officer, sir/miss, etc.), it won’t happen again”, and don’t do that again. Our police officers are great public servants and they usually just want to direct you into lawful compliance, not to bust you.
